5DIY Pool maintenance  Sep 20, 2010 By GEC
*** Come on, Amazon. This is NOT a toy! ***

If you maintain your own swimming pool you need a good test kit to monitor pool chemistry. Taylor makes great pool chemistry test kits.

The chemicals used in these kits don't last forever. You need to buy a new kit (or at least replace the reagents) every few years.

Word to the wise: don't depend on the free tests performed by your local pool supply store. I took a water sample from my salt pool to three different local stores on the same day, and got back test results that differed wildly from each other and from the tests I performed using my Taylor test kit. So who can you trust? I trust the tests I perform myself using my Taylor test kit.

I am not associated with Taylor in any way, other than being a satisfied customer.

5Great test kit, avoid Amato Industries  May 17, 2011 By Tim Witort "TRW"
This is the gold standard in pool test kits. All of the key tests are provided for maintaining your pool chemistry. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and yield accurate results. The kit also includes an excellent little book all about pool water chemistry. Here's the WARNING. Do not order this kit from Amato Industries. I had a nightmare experience with them making error after error in completing my order. First they sent the wrong kit (K-2000). They said they had high-school kids packing up orders and several customers got the wrong kit. They said they'd send the right one out "today or tomorrow". After waiting a week for the correct kit, I checked in with them to get a tracking number. Left messages for days and didn't get a call back. Finally got connected to a person. Well, they actually shipped it out 5 days later than they said they would because they were waiting for a shipment of kits. And they also couldn't find my tracking number. I asked them to contact UPS and get the tracking number and call me with that. They said they would and never called back. What kind of an operation is this? You've got children incorrectly packing your orders, you don't bother calling customers when your promised shipping date falls through, you don't bother recording tracking numbers, and you don't call back customers when you promise. Either it's a bumbling, small operation that doesn't know what it's doing, or they just don't care about good service. Either of these disqualifies them from consideration. Get the Taylor kit at your local pool store (if they carry it) or order from a different source. Stay away from Amato.

5The only way to go!  Mar 26, 2010 By William Edwards "Rex"
Bought to maintain my Hot Tub spa based on recommendations in the PoolandSpa forum. This is the only way to go. You'll never get the chemistry right using strips. It gives accurate measurements which makes it easy to add the right amount of chemicals.

Using strips should be against the law!

Buy it, you'll be glad you did!

5Best Choice and Great Quality  Nov 03, 2011 By mixer 1979
I originally purchased the K-2005 and recently upgraded my kit to FAS-DPD with Taylor's K-1515-A. I am NOT dissapointed at all. I have continually had trouble taking measurements with super-chlorination TC/CC and under-chlorinated trace levels. No longer do I have to mix down the sample with DI. I have a recent OTO reading to tell me if I need to test high or low, then run the FAS-DPD test appropriately (0.2 ppm titration or 0.5 ppm titration). Or if you're not that concerned, run the test that suits your fancy. I also purchased an extra bottle of R-0871 so I am not worried about running out (at 20 ppm that would be 100 or 40 drops of reagent per test). My only other concern with the kit as I wrote on my K-2005 review is that I found the CYA reagent quantity a little short. This was the original reason for going after a good kit .. my local pool store was giving me fluctating readings in too short a timeframe. The kit only comes with enough reagent for six tests. Considering the low marginal shipping cost, consider getting an extra bottle of CYA reagent (R-0013). I don't test CYA often, but when I do it is usually tested several days in a row to make sure the sample is representative. Finally, take a look at the booklet that comes with the kit. Handle it wet, drop it in the pool, it doesn't matter .. the pages are made of plastic or vinyl. It's perfect for a poolside test kit. Even the instructions glued to the lid of the kit are waterproof.

Products in Review:
Taylor K-1000 Basic Residential Pool & Spa Test Kit OTO ballpark test and daily tests
Taylor FAS-DPD Titrating Reagent (Chlorine) 2 oz R-0871-C
Taylor Cyanuric Acid .75 oz R-0013-A ~ 3 tests (kit comes with two bottles)
Taylor Cyanuric Acid 2 oz R-0013-C ~ 8 tests
Taylor Cyanuric Acid 16 oz R-0013-E ~ 65 tests
(Keep in mind the 16 oz bottle is not a dropper bottle)
(Additionally reagents should not be kept more than one year)

5Pool Test Kit Meets Expectations  Jun 26, 2011 By pool guy
I had trouble matching the colors with the cheaper pool kits. This kit lets me to definitively determine the free and combined chlorine levels in my pool. In addition it lets me determine determine cyanuric acid levels and total water hardness. I am very happy with this kit.
