5Poll route man's opinion  Feb 17, 2012 By Dono
I put cleaners in my pools that don't already have something existing. For every outdoor unit, I need a leaf canister and have tried the Hayward Standard W560 with leaf basket, the Pentair snap lid with bag, and this one - the 530. The Pentair cracks at the hinge and has on every one I've tried and the O ring gets stretched out quickly and won't fit. The small Hayward with basket is okay but the basket will split if left alone and you have an unexpected large amount of debris.
This unit has held up to owner abuse and sun. The only part I've replaced is the O ring. If one does NOT wipe the O ring with any grease or silicone the O rings stays pretty clean. If you add Vaseline type goo to the O ring, it will attract every piece of grit and stick in the goo and is generally a mess. Just wipe it dry or rinse it off. Press the lid back in evenly and no troubles.
Try not to cross thread when reassembling and it goes together smoothly and easily.

When it's time to empty the can, drain the water, unscrew the retainer ring, PLACE THE BODY FLAT ON THE DECK, one hand on the body and one hand to push on the projecting intake port lid that sticks out of the top. It pops out. Empty bag, rinse the lid with the o-ring. Wipe or rinse the clear canister where the lid sits. Push back in evenly, screw down the ring and you are done.

This can connects between regular Kreepy / Barricuda / or Navigator hoses. No extra adapter needed.

Replace the o-ring when it gets stuck or stretched or brittle. O ring is also sold here at http://www.amazon.com/Hayward-Pool-Cannister--Ring-AXW542/dp/B0030J1P9S/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1329438548&sr=8-16

As with ALL cleaner parts and hoses, keep your Calcium at 250 ppm or higher. A simple test at your pool store tells you how much you have in the water. It never evaporates and will only go away when you drain water and fill with rain or hose water. No calcium and parts get brittle and worn VERY quickly.

5Hayward Leaf Canister works GREAT  Mar 19, 2011 By TinCupp
After reading multiple reviews regarding different canisters and inline catching devices, this one caught my eye. I really liked the fact that it was an in-line, had a bag net and was easily cleanable.

Every spring I have to contend with my Pool startup routine. This typically includes cleaning my DE filter twice.

First is prior to starting the vacuuming process to gain maximum suction from my filter system. Second is after the pool cleanup is complete due to all the silt and particles getting past my pool pump and into my DE Filter.

This canister did a wonderful job. It caught 95%the sediment, leaf remnants and mini rocks that had flaked off my pool deck during my winter freeze and ended up on the bottom of the pool.

The canister was easy to clean out and store. I highly recommend using a bit of seal grease on the rubber o-ring to prevent leaking and help with long term storage between seasons.

Great job Hayward, this product was well worth the money.

UPDATE (05/12/11) - Decided to start using the canister on a full time basis to keep debris out of my pump and DE filter. I love the handle on the canister as it makes un-attaching and re-attaching the suction hose a breeze. Makes for easy priming as to not allow air into system after cleaning. Only drawbacks I have seen to date have to do with small particulates sitting outside the net but in the canister. You must be careful when pulling out of the pool and emptying water back in as those will easily pour back into the pool. Secondly, the filter net is a bit challenging to clean around the nets wide plastic mounting O-Ring within the canister. Particulates tend to collect within the ring and net stitching. Still would give this system 5 Stars.

4Easy leaf collection  Oct 10, 2010 By I Can DO It!!!
This is my 3rd leaf cannister for my Kreepy Kraulie and is my favorite. My 1st was the regular size Hayward and worked fine, but was too small for our heavily treed lot. The 2nd was a large capacity from another manufacturer, but the locking system was difficult to open and close. The Hayward is very easy to open, empty and close. I will stay with the screw on top for all future purchases.

5harvard leaf canister  Jan 10, 2010 By Charles R. Lynn "clynn1401pmp"
The leaf catcher was easy to assemble and install. It allows the leaves, that my cleaner picks up, to be captured in the canister without additional strain on the pump and without them getting to the pump. The filter sock is easy is easy to remove, clean and reinstall. This is an excellent product.

5ONE LESS HEADACHE SOLVED!!!  May 24, 2011 By z&gmom
I AM A SINGLE MOTHER WITH A TODDLER... WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO SPEND MUCH TIME ON POOL CARE. I FOUGHT CLEANING MY POOL WITH A SMALL CANISTER FOR ONE YEAR. I WISH I HADN'T. I ORDERED THIS CANISTER, AND IT HAS BEEN HEAVEN TO JUST TURN ON MY PUMP AND LEAVE. SOMETIMES THE CANISTER FLOATS, BUT IT IS AIRTIGHT. JUST KEEP PUTTING VASELINE ON THE GASKET AND IT WILL ALWAYS PULL APART EASY FOR CLEANING. NOW I CAN PLAY WITH MY TODDLER INSTEAD OF IGNORING HIM TO VACUUM OUT THE POOL EVERYDAY. I STILL HAVE TO CLEAN MY FILTER EVERYDAY BECAUSE MY ABOVE GROUND POOL IS UNDER TREES, BUT I DO THAT WITHOUT HAVING TO EMPTY THE CANISTER. IT DOESN'T CAUSE LOSS OF SUCTION EVEN WHEN THE BAG HAS A GOOD AMOUNT IN IT. I LOVE THIS CANISTER. BTW, IT WAS WAY BIGGER THAN I THOUGHT. THAT WAS A NICE SURPRISE. IT DOESN'T COME WITH A BASKET, IT COMES WITH A BAG. SO FAR THE BAG IS HOLDING UP GOOD. ITS BEEN A FEW MONTHS.
