Best performance for the value, despite a few quirks Mar 29, 2011
By J. Green I have been searching for the laptop of my dreams for several months, and after settling for the ASUS N53SV-XV1 I can tell you with 100% confidence that I made the right choice. This is the absolute best laptop you can buy for the money. There is simply nothing else out on the market right now for this value. The core components (processor, hard drive, screen, sound, graphics card) are unbeatable. It gives you the portability of a 15" laptop and the performance of a desktop replacement.
Pros: - Great performance from Intel 2nd generation Sandy Bridge processor (quiet, efficient, and powerful) - Sound is AMAZING. Loudest speakers available on a laptop (great for watching TV/movies) and built-in bass - 1080p, 1920 x 1080 resolution screen is gorgeous and great for multitasking - Good, but not great NVIDIA graphics - 4 memory slots allow you to get 16 GB maximum if you upgrade - 7200 rpm hard drive means you get the most performance possible without paying hundreds for still too expensive SSDs - Full keyboard with number pad - USB 3.0 (will be standard on most new laptops soon, though) - ASUS global and accidental warranties come standard
Cons: - Not as much RAM as you would hope for, though getting more is fairly cheap and easy to install - Average battery life for a 15" laptop - Keyboard is a bit funky, and takes some getting used to. Also not backlit.
*NOTE* - The chipset is an Intel HM65, not HM55 as listed on Amazon. - This laptop is slightly wider than most 15" laptops (about an inch), though roughly equal in other dimensions. It might have trouble fitting into bags or cases designed for the standard 15.6" size. - When first posted, Amazon listed this laptop as having an eSATA port. It does NOT in fact have one, and it has been removed from the product description.
My priorities when buying a new laptop were performance, high resolution screen, and portability. This laptop accomplishes what I need better than anything out there right now. I say right now because things may change once all of the major manufacturers get the new processors in their models and start cranking out similar setups. But who knows when that will happen, and even then it will be difficult for them to match the value of this computer.
If you are considering buying this computer, I would only recommend that you buy more RAM, since it comes with only 2 x 2 GB and there are 2 more slots that can be filled ( I bought and installed an additional 2 x 4 GB to bring the total to 12 GB). The battery life is not that great, but may be due to the fact that the battery is a standard 6-cell. If you need to be unplugged for more than 3 or 3 and a half hours I recommend investing in a larger capacity battery, as this laptop was not necessarily designed to be the ultimate in portability. There have also been some complaints about the keyboard, but it really isn't that bad and just takes some getting used to. If you don't like it, get a new one and it will take just a few minutes to replace.
If you have any questions feel free to add comments to my review and I will try to answer them as quickly as possible!

Powerful Notebook, Amazing Value! Mar 24, 2011
By N. Amaral Brief Review:
This laptop is perfect for desktop replacement home use; for the money $1,050, this is the best laptop available IMHO. It is very well rounded, with one of the fastest mobile processors available and a mid range GPU.
Pros: Value Top notch processor Full HD Display 1080p Low heat & low power consumption
Cons: -Keyboard (I prefer chicklet) -Wireless Adapter -Wider than most 15.6" laptops
Further Detail:
Power consumption and heat are also strong points. This laptop has the latest Sandy Bridge CPU which sips power due to 32nm production process as well as integrated graphics (NVIDIA Optimus to switch to the dedicated GPU as needed).
The Full HD 1080p display is beautiful. Great for photo editing and multitasking with ample desktop "real estate."
The keyboard in my unit is not as squishy as other reviewers. What I find annoying is the lack of separation in the keys. I plan on swapping this out for a compatible "chicklet" style keyboard as soon as possible.
This is my first 15.6" notebook so it feels wide to me. Just to make sure it was not because I was new to this size laptop I verified that it is longer than other brands 15.6" laptops. Asus N53SV: 39.1 cm | Dell XPS 15: 38.1 cm | HP dv6t: 37.8 cm | Lenovo T510: 37.3 cm | Sony VAIO C: 37.5 cm.
I had planned (and since completed) several upgrades to the laptop including 16GB ram, and 160GB SSD. With these upgrades (and hopefully a "chicklet" keyboard in the near future) I rate this laptop five stars. For the money it is hard to beat what ASUS is offering with the N53SV.

Great specs at an AMAZING price! Mar 24, 2011
By A Heavy Guy If your in the market for a mid-level laptop, LOOK NO FURTHER! Pros- SUPER Fast Sandy Bridge i7 Decent battery life Very attractive design NVIDIA Optimus technology Runs pretty cool Beautiful 1080p screen Decent sound for a laptop
Cons- No Blu-ray Keyboard layout a little awkward A little heavy for a mid size laptop Bloatware
I've used Asus products for years but this is the first laptop of theirs that I've owned, and I'm very impressed. Feels solid and runs great. Try pricing out a comparable computer and you'll spend at least 1500. One thing I will point out is even though the website description says this has an eSATA port, it doesn't. This thing is fast, especially once you remove some of Asus' pre-installed software. My old Core2Duo ran so much hotter than this quad-core. Running flash and hd video is like nothing to this computer. Haven't tried any games yet but I've heard reports that it can do pretty well with most games on medium settings.
Trust me, you'll have a hard time finding something comparable for the price!

5 Stars...With a Few Provisios May 09, 2011
By J. Bunner First Take: Received it on a Friday - had all weekend to tinker with it. It is a handsome laptop. Stylishly understated aluminum color (peel the stickers off the palm rest and it looks sharp). Not as heavy as some reviewers claimed (lighter than my three year old Toshiba). The power brick is a bit bigger than my others...however, it is providing 120 watts not 60 or 90 like less powerful machines...it has to be larger, but, not massively so. The ASUS is about 1/2" on a side larger than spouse's 15.6" Samsung. Keyboard does flex a little around the SDFEC keys - annoying - not a deal breaker (don't know about longevity - that's why there are warranties). This comp is quiet and runs very cool. No problem adding 8 gig more RAM (the panel screws are hidden under the rubber feet). Uninstalled most of the bonus (read: bloatware) software...no issues with loss of key functions. Agonized over ordering the full HD or the less expensive 1300 res screen...this screen is worth the extra $100 - stunning color and graphics. All this speed and capability and no Blu-Ray...go figure...had to hold costs somewhere to aggressively market the price point. It seems like each reviewer received a slightly different version of the same machine - this one has one USB 3 and three USB 2 ports. Wireless seems fast enough for me and sensitivity / range is good. Be aware that if you want to replace the wireless with the Intel 6200 you will have to pretty much dismantle the whole computer - don't do it if you are a klutz. Also the Intel 6200 does not support Bluetooth functions (if Bluetooth is important to you - try the stock configuration first then decide before purchasing a new wireless card).
That's it for a first impression. Will edit as I break things or ??.
10 May - Oops, continuing to remove crapware and the volume went away. Went to ASUS site and downloaded Realtek High Def Audio x64 driver and all was good again (15 minutes from start to finish with three re-starts). The audio on this laptop is the best I've heard on any laptop. Very good treble and mids, lows a bit thin (the speakers are tiny - not much opportunity for deep bass). Lots of volume available. For headphone use I added a right angle plug to relieve stress on the jack.
19 May - received ASUS Warranty / Accidental Damage information I sent last week as "Undeliverable" today from the USPS. Do not send to the 44370 Nobel Drive address. Go to their website and register on-line...the kicker is that you still have to send a copy of your receipt AND a copy of your Warranty Registration confirmation e-mail from ASUS via snail-mail to them...I hope their Service is better than their registration process (I figure they owe me one (1) Forever Stamp for the failed attempt). The good news, I like this 'puter better each time I use it. Bloatware is gone and all my usual programs (Adobe CS5, Sony Vegas Pro 10 and Office 2010) run well.
19 June - back from a three week roadtrip. Comp handled everything well. Connected with a multitude of hotel / family Wi-Fi systems with zero issues. Battery life is decent (image processing Arches NP). Have reverted to generic touchpad driver...theirs is a bit quirky...you lose some of the whizzbang functions but gain speed and reliability.
28 June - still messing around and the Function / Hot Keys went away (mostly). Go to ASUS site and download their ATK Driver and all functions are restored. Reinstalled driver for touchpad and just deactivated most of the multi-touch functions (I like the two finger scrolling...however, too uncoordinated for the Zoom and three finger motions).
26 October - Installed Sony Vegas 11...works like a dream. Will probably replace the 500 gig HD with a 1T soon. The touchpad is sooo sensitive that accidental brushes with my palm while typing causes random command activations and cursor placement. Press Fn-F9 key to de-activate touchpad. Use quality trackball most of time instead. No negative issues with the USB 3 port as reported by others. Never will get used to keyboard. Machine remains fast, very quiet to use. Would still purchase this comp inspite of the minor aggravations.
16 January 2012 - Final Edit - added Panasonic UJ240 6x Blu-ray Burner BD-RE/8x DVD±RW DL SATA Drive (Black) (Electronics) today. Installation was a breeze and it works great. I guess the new models have Blu-Ray's already installed and they apparently have better keyboards...ASUS must have listened to the reviewers kvetching...darn, too early to upgrade to a new model...Adios Amigos

Excellent laptop all around Apr 23, 2011
By Matt Wydra This laptop is all around a great choice. It's extremely fast and starts up quickly, and its design is quite aesthetically pleasing, as well. Its pros certainly outweigh its cons, as noted below.
Pros: Extremely fast processing speed with TurboBoost technology. The automatic ability to switch between Intel HD graphics and the NVIDIA GPU based on power and performance requirements is awesome. Keyboard has very nice tactile feedback. Built-in numeric keypad is invaluable, especially when editing spreadsheets or entering passwords. Runs cool and quietly. Comfortable to use on lap. The speakers sound excellent. Nice crisp highs and a great amount of bass for laptop speakers. Multi-touch touchpad is a well-received convenience for easy page scrolling and context menu access. Battery life is good. With the screen at 50% brightness, I can get about three to four hours during general computing, such as editing documents and the occasional use of Wi-Fi. Screen is absolutely gorgeous and provides more than enough "real estate" for programs.
Cons: [Edit June 5, 2011] The screen on this laptop, while absolutely gorgeous and crisp, has a terrible viewing angle. This is, however, the nature of the type of screen on this laptop (TN, I believe). A crucial driver is, for some reason, packaged with one of the crap programs that comes with the laptop. Because of this, I had to manually reinstall the driver after I uninstalled the crap program. Not a huge deal, but it is a bit frustrating. Animated graphics appear on the screen each time you use the built-in volume controls, and I can't figure out how to disable them. A minor annoyance.
